Crystal clear seas, eye squinting sunsets and dreamy local dishes. No, we’re not talking Sicily in July, we’re talking Devon in April! Team member Tory has just returned from a wonderful family holiday, spending time in some of the great locations we’ve got lined up on our 2022 holiday programme. Here’s what she had to say.
Boats on the River Dart run like clockwork, you’ll be in safe hands with the experienced local seafarers that know these routes like the back of their hand. Dartmouth’s scenery is continental like, colourful buildings climb the valley sides and ancient monuments, that once protected this sought after estuary, dot the water’s edge. We wandered to the commanding English Heritage site at Bayard’s Cove Fort, this Tudor fort was the town’s last line of defence against enemy ships - with free entry and unique views it’s worth the scenic stroll. We were spoilt for choice with tempting local eateries run by attentive owners that are passionate about what they offer. With two young boys in tow we just had to try the award winning ice cream from Salcombe Dairy at Dartmouth Ice Cream Parlour, dodging the rain shower with quirky indoor beach hut style seating.
We spent two evenings pretending we were in Monaco at Torquay Harbour! The calm water, impressive yachts and thriving palm trees create a Mediterranean vibe, it’s easy to see why Torquay has been captioned “The English Riviera”, the only thing that gave the game away was the nostalgic amusement arcades hidden around town. We enjoyed casual walks between the marina and the new restaurant complex behind Torquay beach, and if you’re feeling adventurous we’d recommend taking the Rock Walk through Royal Terrace Gardens which look particularly spectacular after dark when the steps are illuminated.
Of course, you can’t leave without taking the scenic route through Dartmoor National Park. The graceful nature of the wild horses on the rolling green hills, coupled with rugged rocky outcrops made for a scenic panorama. We left feeling fresh, with happy smiles and full bellies (yes, the Devonshire Cream Teas were delicious as ever!).
