There's 50 miles of fascinatingly beautiful coastline along Suffolk's eastern border with the North Sea, where long stretches of sand hold so much history and seem to go on forever. Quaint villages and medieval towns are scattered across the countryside and offer a delicious choice of independent eateries that'll soon explain why Suffolk is fast becoming known as the 'foodie county'. The mixed landscape of ravaged coastline, thick green woodland and colourful heathland create a wonderful backdrop for touring this quaint little county.
Your 4* boutique, waterfront hotel enjoys tranquil views of Ipswich harbour with an award-winning chef and individually designed bedrooms.
Tour code: A3352
Monday
En route we’ll stop in what’s considered to be Britain’s best-preserved medieval village, Lavenham. Colourful, timber-framed homes and shops line the narrow streets of this wonky Tudor town, offering an inviting choice of boutiques and cafés. We’ve arranged a refreshing cup of tea (or coffee) when you arrive at the hotel.
Tuesday
Start the day with a guided tour of Sutton Hoo – an archaeological discovery made in 1939 that continues to shed light on the ‘Dark Ages’. Visit the Royal Burial Ground, see a full-size replica of the Anglo-Saxon ship found buried here and explore 245 acres of grounds and trails. Next, to the market town of Woodbridge, on the banks of the River Deben and bordering an AONB. We’ve arranged a visit to The Tide Mill Museum, an 800-year-old working tide mill and one of only two left in the country!
Wednesday
From our base on Ipswich’s stylish waterfront you may wish to take a scenic cruise along the River Orwell, or simply spend the day watching the boats bobbing up and down in the harbour. You’ll be within 15 minutes’ walk of the theatre, boutique shopping on The Saints and Christchurch Mansion, holding priceless collections from Gainsborough and Constable. Spend your day, your way.
Thursday
Start the day on the banks of the River Alde at Snape Maltings where beautifully converted Victorian buildings full of independent shops, galleries and eateries await. On to Dunwich, a town claimed by the sea and known as the 'Lost City of England’. Despite the drama of the sea, the beach front, family-run Flora Tea Rooms thrive and it’s here that we’ve arranged lunch. Finish the day in Aldeburgh where the Tudor Moot Hall grows closer & closer to the water's edge, as the North Sea crashes in.
Friday
Our return journey includes a stop at the hidden and little known, Green Island Gardens complete with a Japanese Water Garden and Seaside Gardens. Visionary plantswoman Fiona Edmond saw the 1987 hurricane, that cleared 20 aces of woodland, as an opportunity to shape the landscape into something special. We've included a Ploughman's lunch in these tranquil surroundings before returning home.
