Spend late summer exploring some of the prettiest locations in the south west. Steam your way along 20 miles of heritage railway across the stunning Somerset countryside and coastline - a nostalgic, memorable journey that passes through traditional stations and unspoilt villages. Take a relaxing drive through the moorland and woodland of Exmoor National Park stopping at quaint seaside and scenic spots along the way. Take time to enjoy one of the area's hidden gems at Knightshayes Court (NT), where summer blooms across formal landscapes. Explore it all from your base in Minehead, a seaside town with a historic harbour and interesting maritime history, follow the information boards along the seafront ‘Maritime Mile Heritage Trail’ to find out more. Monday
Check in, unpack, freshen up and make your way to dinner.
Tuesday
After a leisurely start to the day, spend time in the charming and beautifully preserved village of Dunster before driving through rural Somerset to Bishop’s Lydeard. From here, board the West Somerset Railway and travel back to the hotel in style, steaming your way across 20 miles of coast and country to Minehead.
Wednesday
Spend the morning at leisure before an afternoon amongst 19th century parkland and grand Gothic Revival architecture at Knightshayes. This country house is a rare example of William Burges’ lavish designs with intricately decorated ceilings throughout. There’s over 1200 plant species unique to Knightshayes in the extensive gardens and the ever-changing displays are full of seasonal colour.
Thursday
We’ll take the spectacular coastal route over Porlock Hill to the twin towns of Lynton and Lynmouth, home to the highest and steepest totally water powered railway in the world (return ride approx. £7). Continue through beautiful scenery to the popular coastal resort at Ilfracombe with its pretty harbour and pastel-coloured houses, backed by dramatic cliffs. Take the scenic route through Exmoor National Park back to the hotel.
Friday
Time to head home.
