This tour embraces Shropshire’s diverse history from its links to the RAF to its role in the industrial revolution. We’ll rail and sail our way through the county, following the pretty River Severn as we go with a calming cruise, accompanied by refreshments, and an exciting steam journey on a heritage line. We’ve arranged an action-packed programme to make sure you get the most out of your stay in this scenic and historical location.

Congratulations to The Severn Valley Railway who won Bronze in the Resilience & Innovation category at the 2022 VisitEngland Awards for Excellence. Their virtual train tours and Covid-secure trips made them more than deserving of this hardworking win.

Monday

En route to the hotel we’ll stop at RAF Cosford to uncover fascinating true stories from their five huge hangers. Expect to find tanks, vintage cars, sea planes, propeller planes, missiles and so much more in their impressive collection. There’ll be tea/coffee/biscuits waiting for you at the hotel.

Tuesday

This morning we’ll take a gentle cruise along the famous River Severn Loop from Shrewsbury. Expect to see an array of colour in summer as flowers bloom along the banks. Enjoy some free time in the medieval market town of Shrewsbury before we depart for The National Trust’s Attingham Park. This 18th century estate has a classical, Italian influence with extensive parkland and a huge organic walled garden.

Wednesday

Spend free time in the pretty town of Bridgnorth with its 19th century funicular railway and the ancient Cartway – one of Shropshire’s most interesting streets. Here we’ll board the Severn Valley Railway for a vintage steam along the Severn, crossing it at the impressive, 200ft Victoria Bridge. We’ll disembark at Kidderminster and head to the thriving medieval market town of Ludlow for free time before returning to the hotel, enjoying the scenery of Wenlock Edge along the way.

Thursday

Step in to the age of steam this morning at Blists Hill – this award-winning open-air museum has recreated an authentic Victorian Town complete with a pharmacy, workshops and even a mine. They’ll be free time to enjoy Ironbridge Gorge, a town that was once the centre of the industrial revolution which now thrives as a tourist destination. Finish at the medieval town of Much Wenlock with impressive ruins of a 12th century priory and a host of traditional pubs.

Friday

En route home we’ll visit West Midlands Safari Park, home to red pandas, wallowing hippos, playful meerkats, inquisitive lemurs, deadly reptiles, elegant striped zebra, white rhinos, rare African painted dogs and kings of the beasts - the African lion - to name but a few!
