This beautiful island has the best of both worlds - deep green rolling countryside and endless sandy beaches hosting some of Britain’s best wildlife watching spots. The island has a unique heritage of motorsport, folklore, Vikings and smugglers and you’ll find nods to it all across the island at its many attractions. One of the best ways to experience the island is with a ride on the original Victorian and Edwardian rail lines and we’ve arranged no less than three heritage journeys for you to enjoy.

Click to download heritage walks in Douglas and Castletown, these self-guided walks from Visit Isle of Man will allow you to get to know the area at your own pace.

Wednesday

Cross the Irish Sea on a relaxing 3.5 hour sailing from Heysham to Douglas.

Thursday

Enjoy a scenic island tour today starting in the ancient capital of Castletown, with picturesque fishing cottages along the harbour and a superbly preserved Viking castle that towers above. Next, visit the secluded beauty spot at Niarbyl Bay. This is one of the island's most picturesque locations and on a clear day you may see Ireland’s Mountains of Mourne in the distance. Finish the day in Ramsey with its beautiful long sandy beach, promenade walkway and Victorian Pier.

Friday

Spend your day at leisure. Enjoy a book on the beach, visit the Manx Museum, wander in the Promenade Gardens, download Douglas' Heritage Walk (link in the destination description) or perhaps take time to scout out some local treats in the town’s shops and cafés.

Saturday

Today we’ll start on the west coast in Peel, a beautiful bay with a long sandy beach enclosed by a medieval castle, a lively harbour, red cliffs and a promenade selling local tasty treats. Ride out to the island's southernmost tip at The Calf of Man for stunning views from The Sound, before boarding Britain’s longest, narrow gauge railway at Port Erin. The original locomotives and carriages offer a nostalgic way to enjoy the island's charming countryside as you ride back to Douglas.

Sunday

Enjoy a coastal ride this morning on the Manx Electric Railway from Douglas to Laxey on original Victorian and Edwardian trams. At Laxey we’ll transfer to the Snaefell Mountain Railway, with spectacular summit views (2036 feet above sea level) before descending to Laxey for free time. Finish the day at the island's only historical estate at Milntown, a 16th century mansion surrounded by ornamental gardens, water features and woodlands walks.
