Stay in the timeless University City of Durham with cobbled streets beneath your feet and towering architectural masterpieces up above. The whole city is steeped in history and heritage with over 600 listed buildings and its very own UNESCO World Heritage Site, formed by the Romanesque Cathedral and the adjacent Norman Castle. Start planning your free time with This is Durham.

Step back in time at Beamish Museum where a multi-million pound ‘Remaking Beamish’ project has seen the opening of new exhibits including a 1950s Town and Farm, a Bus Depot and the expansion of the 1820s Landscape. The treasured permanent collection at The Bowes Museum is complemented by fascinating temporary exhibitions including over 50 rarely seen works by Northern artists, Norman Cornish and LS Lowry, in a powerful exhibition dedicated to the region's distinctive industry (here until Jan 2025 only).

Settle in at your 4* city hotel.

Tuesday

Visit the historic market town of Barnard Castle, which takes its name from the 12th century fortress around which it grew. Perhaps explore the imposing ruins perched above the Tees Gorge (free for English Heritage Members) or wander amongst the charming independent shops and local eateries. Visit the highly impressive Bowes Museum, housed in a Grade I Listed French-style château and holding a treasured collection of fashion, furniture and fine art.

Wednesday

Spend the day, at leisure, in the beautiful Cathedral city of Durham. Stroll to the Castle and Cathedral UNESCO World Heritage Site and be impressed by ancient artefacts or uncover the city’s prehistoric past in the Museum of Archaeology (free entry). The city boasts a great choice of riverfront bars and restaurants, or perhaps head further afield and follow a scenic Riverside Walk.

Thursday

Visit Beamish – a world famous, open air museum guiding you through life in the NE from the 1820s to the 1950s. A multi-million pound ‘Remaking Beamish’ project has seen the opening of a 1950s town and farm featuring a hairdresser, a pavilion, a chip shop and more! Step inside a 1900s town and colliery, peep inside a pit village cottage, ride the colourful, heritage trams and experience wartime life on a 1940s farm. There’s a full days’ worth of discovery at Beamish along with a fitting choice of eateries including a tea room, chip shop and pub.

Friday

En route home we’ve included a fascinating visit to The Green Howards Museum in Richmond with a light buffet lunch.
