During the day, take a refreshing walk along Paignton's prom or a gentle stroll around the picturesque harbour. In your free time you might like to visit the zoo, which is dedicated to the conservation of wildlife or the pier, which serves as a reminder of the resort’s Victorian past. Perhaps the most interesting building in the town is Oldway, an opulent mansion built in 1874 by Isaac Singer (of the sewing machine family). Apparently some of the features were copied from the Palace of Versailles! It’s “Christmas Eve” in Paignton so check in with tea/coffee then meet in the bar this evening for a welcome cocktail and canapés.
Tuesday
“Merry Christmas” from The Queens Hotel! Look out for a small gift from Santa before spending the morning in the lively fishing port of Brixham, where colourful houses tower above the pretty harbourside. Back in the hotel bar/lounge there’s a themed quiz with tea/coffee and a mince pie before this evening’s traditional Christmas dinner.
Wednesday
Take a “Boxing Day” country ride to Newton Abbot on market day before calling at Buckfast Abbey for an early afternoon stroll in the serene gardens, a mooch around the interesting gift shop or time to reflect on the spirit of Christmas in the beautiful church. Return to the hotel where a refreshing tea/coffee and shortbread awaits.
Thursday
Take a trip down memory lane during this morning’s visit to the Bygones Museum, just along the coast in Babbacombe. Walk through an authentic Victorian street and a World War Trench, be captivated by the 28-foot model railway and climb aboard a steam engine. Later, try your luck at Bingo and enjoy a complimentary mulled wine after dinner this evening.
