This beautiful, medieval market town is packed with interesting buildings and family friendly public gardens, with no less than four unique mazes to enjoy. There's been a market on this site since 1141 selling traditional, local goods such as fruit, veg, flowers, collectables and whole foods. In 2018 it won Best Small Outdoor Market in the Great British Market Awards and in 2023 it was named as The Sunday Times "best place to live in the east" with judges praising its country feel, busy high street and café scene. Download the Medieval Walden walking trail or their World War Two Trail for interesting insights into the town's past.
In celebration of #EnglishTourismWeek25, the local Town Council and TIC are kick starting the new season by highlighting the importance of local tourism with their very own stall at this week's market. Pop along and try a freshly baked Saffron Bun (whilst stocks last), pick up a town trail and chat with the friendly team (don't forget to let them know you've travelled with Shaws). There's also the rare opportunity to meet in front of The Town Hall at 14:30 for a free introduction to this historic building. 2025 Local Supplier Champions - Hello Food Tours - are offering an exclusive food taster tour today too for just £30pp (12:30 start, for 1.5 hours). This includes a visit to three of the very best award winning food businesses in town (with food included) and a historical guided tour of your medieval surroundings - to add on the taster tour contact the tourist office by 16 Mar on 01799 524002 or email.
Customers love this destination. "We enjoyed our trip to Saffron Walden yesterday. Excellent driver, very good timekeeping and comfortable coach" and "Bridge End Garden was well worth the visit ... St Mary's Church was very impressive and surprisingly large given the size of the town".
The coach is due to arrive at 12:00 and depart at 16:30, we'll set down and pick up in the Swan Meadow Car Park so it's just a short walk down Park Lane to the centre of town. Opening times/dates for the mazes vary so please check with the local TIC. Got a question? Ask our friendly team.
